Sydney, You Were Magic!

On Wednesday 6 September, the Very Short Film Festival landed in Sydney for the very first time — and what a debut it was.

Held at Event Cinemas Bondi Junction, the event was completely sold out, with a buzzing crowd eager to experience bold, brilliant short films from across Australia.

The evening featured a screening of the 2025 Official Selection, followed by a live Q&A panel hosted by David Balfour, Head of Film & Television at the Victorian College of the Arts. There were tears, laughter, and plenty of inspiration.

Six talented NSW filmmakers joined the conversation, sharing insights into their creative process and the stories behind their work:

  • Art Walsh (Doof Bros)

  • Tahlia Magistrale (Cleaning My Old Room)

  • Marina Zivkovic (Fractured Lines)

  • Indianna Thompson (Communication)

  • Eames Atkinson (Movie Night)

  • Darcy Buckle (Letting Go)

It was an inspiring, lively discussion covering both our Open and Junior categories, with plenty of behind-the-scenes stories and reflections on the power of short-form storytelling.

We wrapped up the night with post-show drinks — a great chance for filmmakers and audiences to connect and keep the conversations going.

Next stop: Hobart — we can’t wait to bring the festival home and share these incredible films once more.
