One of the most special elements of VSFF is the connection between our finalists, judges, and ambassadors — and the generous exchange of knowledge that happens off-screen.
Each year, we bring industry leaders into the room with our finalists. Whether it’s Marta Dusseldorp, Justin Kurzel, Leah Purcell or Rocco Fazzari — these artists and practitioners speak candidly, sharing lessons they’ve learned from inside the industry.
This year’s VSFF Masterclass brought together 25 finalists for an intimate and deeply valuable session.
The conversation was facilitated by David Balfour, Head of Film and Television at the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) and one of Australia’s leading screen educators.
Joining him were a powerhouse panel of mentors:
Leah Purcell – Multi-award-winning actor, writer, director, producer and cultural leader
Bain Stewart – Prominent Indigenous producer and founder of Oombarra and Bungabura Productions
Peter Rees – Award-winning creator and director known for bold storytelling
Rocco Fazzari – Celebrated artist and animator, and the creative mind behind this year’s VSFF artwork
“Insight into the ‘real’ film world is always valuable. You can’t get that kind of advice and insight anywhere else.”
— Kaelyn, 2025 Finalist
“The masterclass was brilliant. The practical and honest advice was so valuable, and it felt like the mentors were genuinely trying to help.”
— Kristo, 2025 Finalist
It was honest, practical, and inspiring — with mentors opening up about their own creative paths, the ups and downs of the industry, and what it takes to keep going.
We’re so grateful to our mentors for their generosity, and to our finalists for showing up with such openness and curiosity.
