Program Outline

Six flexible program modules. Deliver them across six weeks, compress them into an intensive project or adapt them to suit your needs. 

Module 1: Watch & Discover

Explore the VSFF film collection and discover how great very short films work.

Module 2: Find your story

Ideas, themes, the annual VSFF Signature and developing a concept.

Module 3: Write & Plan

Screenwriting, story structure, scripts, storyboards, shot lists and pre-production.

Module 4: Shoot

Filming fundamentals, visual storytelling, performance, sound and production.

Module 5: Edit & Refine

Editing, pacing, sound, music and shaping the final story.

Module 6: Screen & Share

Screening, peer feedback, final refinements and sharing the finished film.

Who is the Filmmaking Program for?

The program is designed for schools and can also be used by homeschoolers, youth and community groups, holiday programs and independent learners. Its flexible six-module structure can be adapted to different ages, groups and learning settings.

What’s included in the program?

The complete six-module Filmmaking Program includes curated short films by emerging Australian filmmakers, film-based case studies, guided activities, worksheets, templates and practical teaching resources.

How is the program delivered?

The program is delivered digitally and can be taught across six weeks, condensed into an intensive project or adapted to suit different teaching and learning needs.

Do I need filmmaking experience or specialist equipment?

No. The program is designed for educators and learners with or without filmmaking experience. Students can use smartphones, tablets or cameras, along with basic editing software.

Can multiple teachers and classes use one licence?

Yes. One licence covers multiple educators, classes and groups within the purchasing school or organisation. Licences cannot be shared between separate organisations.

When will I receive the program?

The 2027 Filmmaking Program will be delivered digitally in early December 2026, ready for the 2027 school year.

How long can I access the program?

Access to the 2027 Filmmaking Program is available until 31 December 2027.

Can I enter a film in the Very Short Film Festival?

Yes! The program can help you create a film for the 2027 Very Short Film Festival competition. Competition entry is separate and subject to the festival’s entry requirements.

Can my school pay by purchase order?

Yes. Schools and organisations can request a quote to raise a purchase order, or request a tax invoice if they’re ready to proceed. Use our Purchase Order Request form.
