‘CHIP’ 2023 FESTIVAL SIGNATURE

Still from the 2022 Very Short Film Festival finalist, The Hunted

CALLING ALL SHORT FORM FILMMAKERS!

Each year the Very Short Film Festival (VSFF) announces a Competition Signature to ensure that the films submitted to our festival are unique. The 2022 Competition Signature inspired over 100 eligible short film submissions in the Junior Category (21 years of age and younger) and Open Category (22 years and older) to the festival, making it extremely difficult for our judges to narrow down judging to a shortlist.

‘CHIP’ 2023 FESTIVAL COMPETITION SIGNATURE

Yes, that’s it…CHIP – now it’s all up to you!

The Competition Signature is not prescriptive and does not necessarily encourage literal interpretations. The Competition Signature is provided to inspire your creativity and imagination for the creation of new films – or perhaps the significant redevelopment of previously uncompleted ideas. Rather than retrofitting existing films, we are looking for fresh new ideas, created for our unique festival. Eligible films must include the Competition Signature in some way. Whether you make a big deal of it or just creatively slip it in, we encourage you to delight and surprise us. VSFF Judge, Leta Keens tells us how CHIP came to be. All of us at the Very Short Film Festival love to chat, throw ideas around, listen to what other people have to say and come up with more ideas. So once judging for this year’s festival was over, we couldn’t wait to get stuck into ideas for the 2023 festival signature. The chat went something like this… I know we have always used a festival signature, but do we really need one? The Signature is the best way we can think of to make sure everyone has the same amount of time to make their films, and to make their films specifically for VSFF. Think of it as a date stamp if you like. Let’s come up with a signature that will provoke strong ideas. Sure, some of us like to be a bit provocative, and that’s great. But VSFF is all about storytelling and creativity in loads of different forms – we don’t want to tell anyone what their stories should be or how they should tell them. Spring Bay Mill is such an amazing place – maybe we should come up with a signature that has something to do with that. Log, saw, timber, echidna…I know, how about chip? Yeah, great idea. It’s about as simple and unambiguous as you can get and has so many possibilities. No one needs to sweat over it – we’re not looking for the smartest use of ‘chip’ in a film, we just need it to be there. Won’t it be amazing, though, to see what all those clever filmmakers out there come up with – we can’t wait for VSFF 2023.
